Camping tips for senior citizens

Camping can be a fun, magical and memorable experience. Although one can very easily pack their gear and enjoy the camping experience of a lifetime in their youth, a lot more planning and consideration is needed for senior citizens.

As one grows older, comfort needs to be increasingly prioritised and one’s health taken into intentional and careful consideration at all times.

Here are some tips for a memorable senior citizens’ camping experience:

Plan properly

When going camping, planning is key. The last thing you want is to arrive at your campsite only to discover that you are missing some essentials.

Start preparing for your camp as early as possible. List all the items you will need and gather all your gear in advance. Planning properly will ensure that you find a campsite with decent facilities, and that you purchase and pack the correct gear to ensure your comfort.

Get a tall tent

Getting a tent with a high ceiling lessens the need to bend over. This will decrease your chances of developing aches and pains.

Try your best to find a tent that is tall enough for you to stand up in. This way, you will enter and exit your tent with ease. A canopy tent is also ideal and worth considering.

Prepare for comfort

It is important to ensure that you are as comfortable as you can be. For sleeping, use an air mattress with insulation and padded comfort, or even a camp cot.

Make sure that you also pack comfortable pillows. When packing a sleeping bag, ensure that it is appropriate for the temperature.

In order to relax comfortably during the day, sit on a chair that is comfortable, padded and has back support.

Bring something to keep you busy

While it may be easy for youngsters to spend an entire weekend immersed in high-energy activities such as hiking, kayaking and biking, this may not always be possible as you grow older. Thus, a camp filled with relaxation may be more appealing.

Make sure you bring something to keep you busy as you relax. Suitable suggestions include reading a book, journaling, drawing or painting.

Don’t neglect your health

Your health should always take first priority. When at the campsite, ensure that you consume food which is in line with your dietary requirements. It is also absolutely important to pack any medication that you will need, as well as to take it consistently and correctly as prescribed.
